Fashion in Muharram

“This collection includes 32 portraits of individuals participating in Ashura mourning ceremonies, commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam. The people in these photos are dressed in outfits that sometimes unintentionally feature unfamiliar imagery to them, or they attend the rituals with heavy makeup and unconventional styles for religious gatherings. This contrast vividly highlights the gap between tradition and modernity in the spiritual atmosphere of the event. It appears that in recent years, participants from religious backgrounds, in their effort to adapt to the modern world, have experienced a kind of intellectual void.”
